Milk and Sport: A Healthy Legacy
The Dairy Council invites you to attend its forthcoming conference on Tuesday 9th October at The Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London W1B 1NT.
The preliminary conference programme includes renowned national and international speakers on topics such as the science supporting milk for recovery and rehydration, and a panel discussion on the sports supplements vs food issue.
This will be the third conference in support of the "Milk in Action" campaign which has received EU funding to promote milk and physical activity to young people aged 11-20. The campaign also seeks to provide those who influence their diet and physical activity choices with information on milk and sport and on the need for physical activity and good nutrition at this age.
The full programme is being finalised and more details will be available in due course. There is no charge for this conference but numbers are limited.

This month’s edition, features an academic review on the potential benefits of flavoured milk as a drink for sports people. This edition also features the nutritional demands of swimming and rugby.
The House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee conducted an enquiry into the sports and exercise science and medicine: building on the Olympic legacy to improve the nation’s health. The inquiry focused on how these two areas of research and application are linked, and how lessons learnt from the study of elite athletes can be fed into efforts to improve health, through clinical applications and public health interventions. SENr made a response to the inquiry, detailing the importance of evidence based nutrition advice from regulated and appropriately qualified professionals to assist with building on the legacy to improve the nation’s health. The inquiry has now finished.

The CPD programme theme is Food for Performance and features presentations on nutritional strategies to maintain immune function during intensive training by Professor Mike Gleeson and functional foods and recovery by Dr Glyn Howatson. The day will include an opportunity to visit the recently opened Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) facility and the English Institute of Sport (EIS) Loughborough base.

As part of the EU funded ‘Milk it for all it’s worth’ campaign, SENr’s founding partner, The Dairy Council, have updated their Nutrition and Sport Information Guide. This booklet is written for young people and includes good tips on what to eat pre, post and during training/competition as well as looking at hydration. This resource is free, as is postage and packing.
